Weaned Calves

The long hours that I have been talking about on facebook are due to weaning our last bunch of calves and getting them trucked out of here.  We are experiencing one of the worst droughts in history in the Sandhills and since we are entirely out of grass, the cows had to be trucked out of here to find better feed for them this winter.  It was a lot of work, but ten times better than having to sell them.

On Monday morning, Mr T and I loaded the guys up with the last truckload and sent them on their merry way.  While the guys have been trucking, it has been our job to check on the calves for sick ones, water source and making sure that they have enough to eat.  We also moved bulls around, got loads of cattle in to be trucked out and watered cows in the corrals.  It's required a lot of time on the 4-Wheeler for Mr T and myself.  The Ranger is in the hospital getting worked on it and I am pretty sure that Mr T and I miss it, it's just more convenient but we made do!

Here is some of our calves from this year's calf crop.

Heading out to check calves, they are sure scattered this AM!

This is one of our Braunvieh cross calves.  Something we are trying out.

Our Angus calves - a little more traditional.

Calves on the other side of lake....notice how dry the hill is?  It is just sad.

Lookin' good!

Aren't these Braunvieh calves cute?

Another one!!

Yum, that is good!!!  Nose lickin' good that is!

Mr T - my awesome helper!!!

Last year, we bred some cows to a few leased Braunvieh bulls that we leased.  Here is a pic of one of them from last year....oh, it was so nice and green back then!!

For more info on this breed of cattle, you can check out the link here.  We really like the calves out of these bulls, sure there is some color in them but the calves are by more more muscular than our Angus calves and seem to have a more docile temperment also.  Ranching is always changing and you just never know what direction that you might go!

Have A Blessed Day
